Residency program and invites artists to apply for our latest opportunity.
Make your MARK – FLASH Artist Residency 2024 will include:
- Provision of MakeSpace (for 8 weeks) 29 January – 24 March 2024
- Solo exhibition (for 1 week) 18 March – 24 March 2024
- £500 towards art materials / travel and exhibition expenses

About Make your MARK Artist Residency
The Artist Residency will be awarded via application (to include a project proposal).
The two successful applicants will be offered MakeSpace to use as a project space to work in.
The project space will be available to the successful candidates between 8am – 9pm daily*.
Heating and Wifi are available.
MakeSpace is located in the heart of Keynsham, adjacent to Temple Street and the Leisure Centre.
MakeSpace is well connected through public transport including a short 12 minute walk from Keynsham Train Station. With regular trains and several bus routes from both Bath and Bristol. There are also more than two neighboring car parks (including Ashton Way and the Civic Centre).
Throughout the studio residency, both resident Artists will be expected to deliver a programme of (free admission) events at MakeSpace. Each Artist must provide in total a minimum of: 1 x (1.5 hour) workshop and 2 x (1 hour informal group discussion sessions) to the local and wider community.
The successful applicants will be offered 44AD Associate membership for one year, allowing them to attend Artist crits at 44AD and to host one session during the residency at MakeSpace.
The Artist Residency will culminate in a one week exhibition in the MakeSpace with a Private View hosted at the beginning of the week and an Artists in Conversation Event (viewing and conversation event held around either the finished or work in progress) at the end.
These will be great opportunities for the resident Artists to gather feedback from both the visiting public and peers.
Resident Artists will be expected to work with B&NES Council and 44AD to market and promote Make your MARK Residency and associated events. This will be discussed as part of the induction.
Priority for Artist Residencies will be given to Artists, who may not necessarily have the opportunity and financial resource to make work in a studio environment and afford exhibiting costs. Depending on applications it is anticipated that at least one of the Artists will have a Keynsham connection (either be from, living in or their work will be about Keynsham).
About MakeSpace
MakeSpace serves as a new creative hub to the local community, hosting various events, workshops and pop ups.
Prior to February 2023 this was a long-standing vacant property in Keynsham. It has now been transformed, offering local businesses, art and community groups the opportunity to use a fully serviced, accessible, flexible and affordable space for a range of potential activities.
It has a small kitchenette (with fridge, kettle and urn) and a disabled toilet. The space as a whole is adaptable with tables that can be folded down and pushed to the side as well as peg hole walls allowing works to easily be hung or displayed on shelves. Lots of cupboards and draws for storage.
MakeSpace is located on 2 Riverside Terrace, next door to Baby & Co (rear entrance) and diagonally opposite the entrance to Keynsham Leisure Centre. It is conveniently located four minutes on foot to the nearest bus stop and ten minutes’ walk to Keynsham Train Station.
The refurbishment of MakeSpace is funded by the West of England Combined Authority‘s Love our High Streets Fund. Match funding for the frontage improvements has come from the Keynsham High Street Heritage Action Zone’s Shopfront Improvements project, funded by Historic England. The frontage was designed by YOU&ME Architects and painted by signwriter Tozer.

It is funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s Heritage High Street Fund; the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government’s Future High Streets Fund; and the National Lottery Heritage Fund. About 44AD
44AD is an award winning visual arts charity based at 44AD artspace, in the centre of Bath.
Offering a dynamic gallery programme of community driven art exhibitions and associated events; all free admission for the public in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
44AD artspace also provides 3 floors of studio workspace to some of Bath’s brightest visual artists – whose practice ranges from paint, print and photography to sculpture, video art and performance.
